GUBBIO THE TOWN OF THE ITALIAN CEIO
A GLIMPSE OF THE MEDIAEVAL PAST
FROM THE VET GATE
From the archeological site of the Roman
Theatre where the Endurance Village and its temporary structures
are located and from the Vet Gate is to be enjoyed a unique specatacle:
under the hooves of the horses the remains of the Roman city and
as a backdrop the complex architecture of what is considered by
many to be the most beautiful of all mediaeval cities. From the
archeological area, surrounded by school buildings, sports facilities
and hotels, the historical city centre is reached by an underground
walkway.
Just a few steps bring you to the imposing group of buildings
made up of the Consuls' Palace, the Great Square and
the Pretorian Palace which is the admirable result of a grand
architectural design dating from the beginning of the thirteenth
century which reconciled a political and institutional system
with the affermation of the power of the people of Gubbio.
The square linking the two main edifices is an artificial platform
supported on huge arches
and the Palace of the Consuls on the left is the showpiece of
Gubbio's civic architecture and which, because of its extraordinary
quality, is rightly judged to be one of the most beautiful public
buildings in the whole of
Italy.
GUBBIO HOME TO ENDURANCE
FARIS JABAR INTERNATIONAL
PRIZE
A BRONZE OF ALBA GONZALES
During the Gubbio Endurance races it will award the "Faris
Jabar International Prize", a very special element which
is all to do with educating the public about this sport. The
"Faris Jabar Prize" is a new prize fo the rider
which has displayed the courage to press on to the very end,
without taking into account his age or a simple calculation
of his strength.
The prize, a bronze of the Italian-Spanish artist of international
fame, Alba Gonzales, will go to a pesonality of sports, culture,
literature, poety, science, politics, business, etc, who knows
that life is made up of struggles and sacrifices, that one
cannot always be the winner, but who is conscious of having
earned the respect of all, in particular himself, because
he has fought the good fight with commitment and self denial,
strength and courage, courage, so much courage, as much as
this fantastic horse has had and still has today.
In the picture the sculpture of Alba Gonzales.
